Power System Engineer

Columbia Power & Water Systems seeks an individual for a full-time, exempt position to plan, design, and specify distribution lines and services for Columbia Power System facilities.

Duties and responsibilities include the following: provide planning and engineering functions to support the Vice President of Power Operations; direct, coordinate, and execute the development of computer engineering studies, such as system protection, short circuit, load flow, arc flash, voltage drop, power factor correction, and power quality; operate SCADA, Outage Management, and other computer systems; analyze distribution system for proper loading and coordination of protective devices; study power system for load growth; oversee and manage TVA Energy Conservation and renewable energy programs; serve as a technical expert on a daily basis to other employees within CPWS; perform computer analysis by entering information in databases; design and layout of power distribution lines; prepare cost estimates for new and existing power services; work new power service requests; prepare detailed construction specifications for new and existing power services; operate field engineering equipment efficiently; subject to stand-by, after-hours, and/or emergency call-out; and other work as assigned.

Required skills and abilities include regular attendance at work; acknowledge and adhere to all CPWS policies; perform duties safely without endangering self, others, and the public; ability to read and write; ability to read and understand instructions and job- related material; ability to use mathematic skills with exponents, linear and quadratic equations, and analytical geometry; ability to follow instructions; ability to interact with customers, consultants, contractors, and the general public; ability to use and operate personal computer and electronic devices; ability to stake for new and existing power services; ability to accept the responsibility for job completion; ability to work inside and outside and be exposed to noisy places, fumes, chemicals, toxic substances, and machinery; and the ability to be exposed to weather conditions that are cold, hot, rainy, and windy.

Physical requirements include the ability to sit at a desk or table for up to 8 hours per day; ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing 0 – 25 pounds for 6 hours a day; ability to walk; ability to stand for 8 hours a day; ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch for long periods of time; and the ability to talk, see, and hear.

Residency requirements include residing within a CPWS service territory or Maury County due to the position being subject to stand-by, after-hours, and/or emergency call- out.

Education, experience, and qualifications include the following: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering required; State of Tennessee Professional Engineer License required or within 24-months of hire; valid State of Tennessee Driver’s License required; and a minimum of 5 years of experience in utility engineering or similar field preferred.
