The Columbia Water System will flush approximately 1600 fire hydrants throughout Columbia beginning April 5, 2021. This activity ensures proper operation and helps maintain high water quality. Flushing hydrants often causes the water to appear cloudy. However, there is no health hazard since the cloudy appearance results from air becoming trapped in the water as a result of the flushing process. This trapping of air into the water is called “aeration”. Should cloudiness occur, the water should clear up within a short period of time after enough water use occurs to purge the aerated water from the affected plumbing. If the cloudy appearance continues for more than twenty-four (24) hours, please call the Columbia Water System at 931-388-4833.
