Human Resources Generalist

Columbia Power & Water Systems seeks an individual for a full-time, exempt position to join our growing organization. Support position for planning programs and carrying out policies relating to benefits and personnel activity; responsible for maintaining all centralized personnel records. Work efforts support a collaborative employee group and enhance the culture within the organization.

Duties/responsibilities include the following: facilitates all facets of the administration of the employee hiring process; responsible for the administration of the employee benefit programs; works with employees to ensure their benefits needs are met; facilitates the records administration and external reporting relating to the organization’s human resources function; remains current on changing laws regarding COBRA Continuation Coverage; Family and Medical Leave; and Americans with Disabilities Act; facilitates ongoing relationship activities with benefit providers; coordinates employee wellness program; prepares insurance billing for employee benefits; provides support as needed for the Board of Public Utilities City of Columbia 401(k) Retirement Plan; administer necessary changes to job descriptions required by law and as the position needs arise; assists in the development of the wage and salary plan structure for the employee group; and other duties as assigned.

Required skills/abilities include the following: ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion in all situations related to employee records and performance management; excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication, organization, and planning skills; strong attention to detail; ability to work under pressure from more than one source, such as employee demands versus established policy; ability to use oral and written communication with management, staff, employees, dependents, retired employees, and general public; ability to work on different projects with deadlines and adjust to interruptions; ability to use mathematical skills so to be able to work with financial ratios, data, and statistics; ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure; ability to promote a positive atmosphere; ability to give instructions; ability to read and understand manuals, reports, benefits policies, laws, rules, and regulations; ability to write; ability to listen attentively and respond to coworker(s) questions and concerns; ability to make good decisions and accomplish duties without close supervision; and must have a working knowledge of computer hardware and software, including extensive knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Physical requirements include the following: ability to lift up to 20 pounds; ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds for 1 hour a day; ability to use eyes, hands, and fingers to operate computer keyboard quickly and accurately; ability to sit for 2 hours at a time; and the ability to talk, see, hear, reach, handle, and feel.

Education, experience, and qualifications include the following: High School Diploma or equivalent, required; Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources or related field, preferred; experience in lieu of education will be considered; requires at least 3 years’ experience in the field of human resources; PHR or SHRM designation preferred.
